The Improved, Modern-Day Dentures
If you suffer from permanent tooth loss, you can regain the freedom to smile, talk, or eat without hesitation using implant-supported dentures. Unlike traditional dentures that continuously move around, overdentures are safely secured to your jawbone, and they’re capable of restoring the health of your entire mouth.
In Waterloo-Kitchener, we offer implant-supported dentures to patients who are missing a full-arch or all of their teeth, as well as for those who constantly struggle with daily activities using a traditional denture. You’ll no longer have to worry about your dentures detaching when you eat or speak with these comfortable, natural-looking restorations.
How Dr. Ashraf Places Them
- After speaking with Dr. Ashraf at your initial consultation and creating a treatment plan, the first part of your procedure is placing the implants. We will insert the implants at the front of your mouth where your teeth once were, rather than the back because you’ll most likely have more bone-support here.
- At your follow-up appointment, after your implants have successfully integrated, Dr. Ashraf will make small incisions in your gums to expose the top of your implants. This allows him to attach a healing cap to guide proper gum healing over the next two weeks.
- Next, your healing caps will be replaced with regular abutments. Dr. Ashraf will use these abutments and your gum tissue to make an impression of your mouth and create a corresponding model for your new denture.
- Lastly, a metal bar will be placed on the abutments, and we will test your new denture and artificial teeth to ensure they securely fit. If they do, Dr. Ashraf will permanently secure the denture using a bar or ball attachment.
The Two Different Types
There are two options when it comes to an implant-supported denture. We can use a bar or ball type of attachment, depending on your case and your oral health.
A thin metal bar that goes along the curve of your jaw and attaches to two-to-five implants which are integrated into your jawbone. An attachment is fitted to the bar, denture, or both, and the denture will fit securely over the bar using the clips to attach.
Also known as a stud-attachment denture, each implant in the jaw will hold a metal attachment that fits together with another attachment on the denture. These attachments are often ball-shaped that fit into a concave socket, allowing your dentures to fit in your jawbone stably.
Personal Care for Your Restoration
In order to ensure long-term success for your implant dentures, proper dental care is crucial, and if any mishaps arise, you should call Dr. Ashraf as soon as possible. To care for your dentures, you’ll need to remove them nightly for sufficient cleaning to prevent infections or other complications. Also, going in for your regular dental visits is important because it allows our team to take x-rays of your restoration to verify they’re still positioned correctly.
